Counsellor | Community Health Services

Location: Rockhampton, QLD
Salary: $80,000 + 9.5% Super

The Role

  • The primary role of the counsellor is to facilitate healing and improvements in the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders clients, including those who have been affected by past policies and practices of forced removal
  • Offer a broad range of counselling services including transgenerational grief, loss, trauma and family relationship counselling
  • Undertake client assessment, support and referral to specialists
  • Refer clients to Link-Up services for family tracing and reunion services
  • Wok with established peer support groups and other Stolen Generation groups to either conduct or support healing programs and related activities

  • Certificate IV or higher in counselling, psychology, social work, mental health or related area that fulfills the registration requirements for memberships with professional associations such as Australian Counselling Association (ACA), Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) or similar association
  • Demonstrated understanding of the history and effects of the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and comprehensive understanding of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues
  • Demonstrated counselling skills with experience and knowledge of social, emotional and mental health issues which may include culturally appropriate healing methods of trauma and grief counselling skills
  • Current C Class Drivers License (QLD) is essential
  • It is a condition of employment for this role to be, and to remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, hepatitis A and pertussis (whooping cough) during their employment
