About the Opportunity
As a Mental Health Clinician within the Acute Care Service, you will:
- Provide specialist mental health assessment, triage, crisis intervention, and treatment to adults experiencing acute mental health crises.
- Deliver assertive outreach and community-based interventions to support consumers in the least restrictive environment possible.
- Conduct comprehensive mental health, risk, and psychosocial assessments to inform treatment planning and safe care delivery.
- Develop clinical formulations, safety plans, and recovery-focused interventions in collaboration with consumers, carers, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Work closely with psychiatrists, GPs, emergency departments, community services, and other stakeholders to coordinate ongoing care and discharge planning.
- Provide case management and short-term support to consumers with complex mental health presentations.
- Practice within a trauma-informed, recovery-oriented framework aligned with NSW Health Mental Health Competencies and National Practice Standards.
- Participate in a rotating roster across a 7-day service delivering crisis support to the local community.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Registration as a Registered Nurse, Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, or Counsellor with the relevant professional body.
- Demonstrated experience conducting mental health assessments and delivering therapeutic interventions within acute, community, or crisis mental health settings.
- Strong risk assessment, crisis intervention, and clinical decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Current unrestricted driver’s licence and willingness to travel as required.

About the Service
The Acute Care Service forms part of Community Mental Health within Northern NSW Local Health District and provides rapid assessment, crisis intervention, assertive outreach, and short-term treatment for adults experiencing acute mental health concerns.
Working across community and hospital settings, the team plays a critical role in supporting consumers, families, and carers through periods of acute illness while promoting recovery, safety, and continuity of care.
