Wellbeing for Healthcare Workers: 5 Simple Ways to Protect Your Health
In healthcare, you’re trained to look after others. But who’s looking after the wellbeing of healthcare workers?
Doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals play a vital role in keeping our communities healthy, but that responsibility often comes at the cost of their own wellbeing. At Cornerstone Medical Recruitment (cmr), we’re here to change that. We believe that building a happier, healthier healthcare workforce starts with caring for the carers.
From busy city hospitals to remote clinics, wellbeing for healthcare workers should never be an afterthought, it’s essential to building a sustainable, fulfilling career.
Here are six practical, evidence-based ways to protect your physical, emotional and mental health, because you can’t pour from an empty cup.

1. Prioritise rest
Sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s essential for decision making, recovery and emotional balance.
- Use blackout curtains or a sleep mask
- Stick to a consistent rest schedule whenever possible
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol and electronic devices before bed
2. Eat with energy in mind
Your body works hard. Give it the fuel it needs to keep up.
- Prep healthy meals in advance
- Snack smart throughout the day with nuts, fruit, yoghurt , avoid high sugar snacks and processed foods
- Stay hydrated with water (no, coffee doesn’t count!)
3. Move in moments
Exercise doesn’t need to be structured. Any movement is good movement and is a powerful support tool for wellbeing in healthcare.
- Take walk breaks or stretch between patients
- Walk when you can – even 10 minutes helps.Aim for 30 mins of movement a day, it can be broken down into 10-minute segments and set a goal to reach 10,000 steps a day
- Try yoga, pilates, or dance to keep your body and mind strong and flexible
- Connect with nature – take a walk in the forest or along the beach
4. Protect your mental health
Caring for your mental health isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s part of being well.
- Try mindfulness apps like Calm or Smiling Mind
- Keep a gratitude journal
- Connect with like-minded peers or mentors who can support you
- Services like our Employee Assistance Program and Beyond Blue are here for you
5. Balance work and play
Joy and rest are not indulgences, they’re what keep you going.
- Disconnect after hours when possible
- Take your leave regularly – it’s recovery, not luxury
- Invest time in activities that bring you joy
