The Power of Humour in Healthcare: Why Connection Still Matters
Humour in healthcare isn’t just about lightening the mood, it’s often what helps people get through some of the toughest moments.
In this episode of It Takes Heart, nurse turned comedian Georgie Carroll reflects on the deep connection, camaraderie and purpose that comes with working in healthcare and how humour plays a vital role in it all.
From Nursing Floors to Comedy Stages
Georgie’s path into healthcare wasn’t a straight line, but once she found nursing, it stuck. Like many clinicians, it wasn’t the training that defined her, it was the people.
Her career in intensive care brought both challenge and meaning. It also revealed something many healthcare professionals understand deeply, the emotional weight of the job.
“Healthcare is so wrought with adversity… you kind of have to go in the staff room and decompress.”
And often, that decompression comes through laughter.
The Connection You Can’t Replace
Even after transitioning into comedy full-time, Georgie reflects on what she misses most about nursing and it’s not what you might expect.
“I don’t get the closeness and the connection that I got in nursing… I knew more about some people than I did about my mates.”
It’s a powerful reminder that while career paths can evolve, the human connection built in healthcare is something truly unique.
Laughter as a Lifeline
One of the most refreshing insights Georgie shares is about identity. Healthcare can easily become all-consuming, especially in careers where so much of yourself goes into caring for others. But Georgie’s story is a reminder that you’re allowed to evolve, explore different passions and redefine success along the way.
Her journey highlights something so important for healthcare professionals: you don’t have to choose just one version of yourself. You can be a clinician and a creative. You can love healthcare and still pursue something completely different alongside it. And if your path changes over time, that’s okay too.
Careers aren’t always linear, and life doesn’t come with a limit on how many times you’re allowed to reinvent yourself. Sometimes the most fulfilling opportunities come from backing yourself, following curiosity and being brave enough to try something unexpected.
Finding Joy Without Losing Purpose
Today, Georgie’s world looks very different. Comedy brings energy, creativity and connection in a new way, but nursing still shapes who she is.
That balance between joy and purpose, is something many healthcare professionals are navigating every day.
“The pay and the applause of comedy is way better… but the purpose of nursing is way better.”

More Than Just a Nurse
Alongside her work in healthcare, Nurse Georgie has built a career making people laugh through comedy shows, her very own podcast The Swab and touring around the world. She’s proof that healthcare professionals don’t have to fit into one box and that bringing humour, personality and creativity into the industry can make a real impact too.
Because while healthcare can be serious, the people behind it are wonderfully human. And sometimes, a little laughter is exactly what helps people get through the hard days together.
