Becoming a GP VMO in Australia: Where General Practice Meets Adventure
If you’re ready for something different in your medical career, becoming a GP VMO could be the opportunity that changes everything. This unique pathway blends general practice with hospital-based care, offering clinical variety, lifestyle flexibility, and a deeper connection to the communities you serve.
From emergency departments to remote health clinics, GP VMOs are essential in delivering care across rural and remote Australia. And while the work is rewarding, it’s the people and purpose that leave a lasting impact.
What Is a GP VMO?
A GP VMO (General Practitioner Visiting Medical Officer) provides both community-based GP services and hospital care, often in Emergency or Acute settings. Depending on the location, you might work entirely in a hospital or divide your time between hospital shifts and general practice.
These roles are especially common in regional and remote areas, where medical professionals are valued not just for their clinical skills, but for their contribution to the community.
What Does the Job Actually Look Like?
Every placement is different and that’s part of the appeal. You might be stabilising patients in ED one day and treating long-time community members in a local clinic the next. With cmr’s support, you’ll be matched to the right level of rural exposure based on your experience and goals.
We’ll never drop you in the deep end. Instead, you’ll start in well-supported environments with ED teams or alongside other GPs, anaesthetists, and nurses. From there, you can build confidence and choose to step further into rural practice if that’s where your passion leads.
“I was full of trepidation, but it was the push I needed to get out of my comfort zone. Broome ED was a fantastic place to work. The support, the learning, the challenges – I’d hands down recommend it to anyone.”
Dr Amit, GP VMO

Why Choose This Pathway?
