We sat down with new graduate Emilija, Dentist from rural New South Wales to ask how her regional Dentistry locum with Cornerstone have helped her career.

What inspired you to get into dentistry?

I knew I wanted a job with a health science background and that I enjoyed work using my hands. Dentistry came to me more as a recommendation so I took the leap of faith!

Were you always open to relocating regionally or was there a key moment/occasion that inspired you to take the leap?

I have a background living rurally so I wasn’t shy about the idea. And I thoroughly enjoyed all my regional placements during dental school. The actual decision happened very spontaneously. I wasn’t enjoying some aspects of private practice in the city so I applied to the ad and that was that.

Where were you living prior? Have you ever lived regionally before?

I finished high school in Bega, New South Wales and my dental school placements were in Moe and Shepparton in Victoria.

What do you think are the benefits of living and working in a regional area?

There are so many benefits to one’s lifestyle. Firstly, EVERYTHING you need is only a short drive away which means you have so much more time in the day! Also, the pace of life is slower, people aren’t in a rush and I think this translates to their mentality on life.

Do you believe this has been more advantageous for your career? If so, how?

Definitely! The best phrase to describe my first year out working in a regional public dental clinic was, boot camp. There is a greater demand for dental services and the work in itself is more challenging.

Do you believe this has provided you greater life skills and experience more generally, how?

Well, it was the first time I lived alone. And as I was 3 hours away, I couldn’t just drop in home when things got tough, I had to work it out myself. It really was a test of resilience but I enjoyed every moment and I definitely learned a few important things about life!

What do you love about the region?

Albury-Wodonga was an amazing place to live. There is just so much to do out there! I am a very outdoorsy person so it suited me well! Lots of groups exist such as hiking and other sports. So many bike riding paths and the dam provided water activities like it was the beach! The snow wasn’t too far away either.

What’s your advice to other graduates about seeking work after study?

I would 100% recommend moving out regional/rural for at least the first year. I know many people from my year that did the same and they had no regrets. You learn so much and the environment is a lot more supportive to foster this. And I think because you witness the population that has the greatest demand for dental services it encourages you that much more to love the job.

What was the experience like with Cornerstone Medical Recruitment?

What is the team like where you’re working now?

I am still in public dentistry and the team is absolutely lovely. A lot of the staff have been there for such a long time. I think it must be a great place to work! In fact, one of my colleagues in Wodonga actually worked in the clinic (I am at now) and knows my colleagues.
