Fatigue in Healthcare: 5 Tips to Stay Sharp on Shift
Staying flexible shouldn’t come at the cost of your wellbeing or your patients’ safety. That’s why recognising the signs of fatigue and learning how to manage fatigue in healthcare is essential for everyone.
When you’re working long shifts, travelling between contracts, or adjusting to irregular hours, it can sneak up on you quickly. If you’re not feeling 100%, the best thing you can do for yourself, your patients, and your team is to speak up early.
Here’s how to spot the signs and what you can do to stay safe, focused, and ready to bring your best self to work every day.

Know the Warning Signs of Fatigue in Healthcare
Fatigue isn’t just tiredness, it affects your focus, mood, and safety. Watch for signs like:
🔹 Struggling to stay alert during your shift
🔹 Difficulty focusing on routine tasks
🔹 Mood swings, irritability or feeling overwhelmed
🔹 Experiencing microsleeps or just zoning out
Fatigue Management Tips for Healthcare Workers
1. Set boundaries
Be honest with yourself about how many shifts you can safely take on. Know your limits when it comes to shift length and frequency… It’s okay to say no when you need to.
2. Prioritise rest between placements
Avoid booking back-to-back jobs without downtime. Between jobs, give yourself permission to fully switch off. Recharge, reconnect, and come back stronger.
3. Keep a regular sleep routine (when possible)
We know healthcare hours can be unpredictable. Even small changes – like limiting screen time before bed or keeping consistent wake-up times (when possible) – can help regulate your sleep.
4. Don’t push through, speak up!
If you’re not feeling 100% fit to work, raise this with your manager or recruiter. Safety always comes first.
5. Invest in self-care
Whether it’s exercise, a chat with a friend, or your favourite meal – do what helps you feel yourself again! Looking after yourself outside of work helps you stay sharp on the job.
Next time you’re preparing for a placement, ask yourself:
🔹 Am I rested and ready to work safely?
🔹 Do I need to adjust my schedule or speak to my recruiter?
🔹 What does my body need today?
