Why More Doctors Are Redefining Success in Healthcare
When we talk about redefining success in healthcare, it often starts with an uncomfortable realisation: the path you worked so hard for no longer feels sustainable.
For UK-trained doctor and content creator Dr Chris G, that realisation came early in his career, as burnout, long hours, and systemic pressure in the NHS began to outweigh the meaning he once found in medicine. His story is one shared by many clinicians quietly questioning whether there might be another way.
In this episode of It Takes Heart, Chris shares his journey from disillusioned junior doctor to rural locum in Australia, content creator, and someone who now enjoys a balanced, purpose-led life inside (and outside) of medicine.
From Burnout to Breakthrough
Chris entered medicine with passion and ambition, influenced by his pharmacist parents and the idealised portrayals of hospital life. But the NHS reality was overwhelming. He found himself unsupported, overloaded, and constantly feeling like he wasn’t enough.
“I always felt out of my depth… not enough support around me. You’re given a workload that’s not humanly possible to do and when you can’t do it, you feel like you’re not good enough.”
The slow build of exhaustion eventually pushed him to take a six-month sabbatical after completing his foundation years. During that time, he travelled through Southeast Asia and attended two 10-day silent meditation retreats – a turning point that gave him the space to observe his own mind, confront discomfort, and reset.
“Probably one of the hardest things you can put yourself through… but also one of the most fascinating. When have you ever just observed your own mind for that long?”
That period didn’t end his career, it reshaped it.

A Different Way to Be a Doctor
Back in the UK, Chris tried locum work, but soon found himself drawn to the opportunities in Australia. What started as a suggestion from a friend turned into a new lifestyle, one that brought breathing room back into his life.
“Coming here gave me more of my life back outside of medicine. I enjoy going to work now because I choose to be there.”
Working as a locum in emergency departments across Brisbane, rural Queensland, Tasmania, and NSW, Chris found a version of healthcare that was still meaningful, but not all-consuming. He had time to travel, rest, and re-engage with hobbies he’d left behind.
More importantly, he began to let go of the rigid idea that success in healthcare meant titles, full-time work, or relentless self-sacrifice.
Sharing the Story So Others Don’t Feel Alone
Though naturally private, Chris began sharing his journey online through videos and vlogs, not for fame, but to create the kind of content he once needed to see.
“The hardest part of content creation isn’t the tech… it’s being seen by people you know in real life. That was my biggest fear.”
By being open about burnout, sabbaticals, and alternative career paths, he’s now helping others feel seen, heard, and less alone. His story is part of a larger shift, one where doctors are allowed to be human first, and clinicians are supported to carve out careers that fit who they really are.
Chris hasn’t left medicine. He’s just found a way to make it sustainable and in doing so, he’s helping redefine success in healthcare for a generation who needs that vision now more than ever.
