Fast-Track Your Move: The GP Expedited Pathway for UK, Irish & NZ Doctors
If you’re a GP trained in the UK, Ireland or New Zealand and looking to live and work in Australia, the GP Expedited Pathway could be your golden ticket. This streamlined route offers a faster, simpler way to register and start practicing, helping you skip the long wait times and complex processes of traditional pathways.
Here’s what you need to know.
What is the GP Expedited Pathway?
The GP Expedited Pathway is a fast-tracked registration process for overseas-trained GPs with recognised qualifications. It reduces paperwork and wait times so you can start making a difference in Australia’s healthcare system sooner.
It’s ideal for doctors trained in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand.

Who’s Eligible?
Specialist GPs with one of the following accepted qualifications will be eligible to apply:
- Membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP) from 2009 and a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST)
- Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (FRNZCGP) from 2012
- Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (United Kingdom) from 2007 and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
Step by Step: How It Works
Here’s how the process unfolds, with cmr by your side.
1. Accept a formal job offer
You’ll need a confirmed offer in a clinic in a Distribution Priority Area (DPA).
2. Verify your medical qualifications
Apply to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) to verify your primary and specialist medical qualifications. Ensure your qualifications are listed on the Board’s Expedited Specialist Pathway: Accepted Qualifications List.
3. Apply for the Expedited Specialist Pathway
Lodge your application with a supervised practice plan via the Medical Board of Australia.
4. Apply for a Visa
Most doctors apply for a subclass 482 visa, we can help with this, including dependents.
5. Get Medicare Provider Number
After your visa is approved, you can apply for your provider number and start onboarding.
6. Start Working in Australia
You’ll begin supervised practice and complete orientation into the healthcare system.
How Long Does It Take and What Will It Cost?
One of the biggest benefits of the GP Expedited Pathway is how quickly things move. Once your paperwork is submitted, approvals typically take just 8 to 10 weeks, much faster than traditional routes.
As of now, the total cost is approximately $2,575 AUD in total, covering the application fee ($1,548) and registration fee ($1,027). Please note: these fees are current at the time of writing and may change over time, so it’s worth checking for the latest updates before applying.
The Moratorium (Section 19AB)
As with all overseas-trained GPs, you’ll be required to work in DPA locations for up to 10 years, though this can be reduced to 5 years by working in rural or remote regions.
Supervision & CPD
You’ll start in a supervised role and be expected to complete:
- 50 hours of CPD annually
- Workplace assessments
- Cultural safety training
Visa Options for GPs
- Subclass 482 (TSS Visa) – Sponsored, temporary work visa
- Subclass 494 – Regional work, with a PR pathway
- General Skilled Migration – For permanent residency after fellowship
